Town centre — for first-timers and castle weekends

If it's your first visit, stay central. From the High Street and the lanes around Peascod Street you can be at the Castle gates in five minutes, at either railway station in six, and choosing between forty restaurants without getting the car out. The trade-off is liveliness: expect footfall by day and cheerful noise from the pubs on Friday and Saturday evenings. Our High Street penthouse — with castle views from the bath, no less — is the archetype of a centre stay.

Eton — for charm, quiet and the best view of Windsor

Cross the pedestrian bridge over the Thames and you're in Eton: one long, handsome high street of antique shops, tailors and independent restaurants running up to Eton College. It's noticeably calmer than Windsor at night, yet the Castle is still under ten minutes' walk. The famous view of Windsor Castle is actually from Eton, across the river — our Brocas Street townhouse has it from a private roof terrace. Choose Eton if you want character and quiet in equal measure.

Riverside — for boats, swans and summer evenings

The stretch of Thames between Windsor Bridge and Romney Lock is the town at its prettiest: boat trips from the promenade, rowers from Eton's boathouses on the Brocas, and swan-feeding by the hundred. Riverside stays are glorious from April to September; in winter, the appeal shifts to bracing walks and empty towpaths. Book early for summer weekends and Henley-to-Ascot season.

Residential Windsor — for longer stays, parking and peace

Ten to fifteen minutes' walk from the centre, the streets of Clewer, St Leonards and Spital are where Windsor actually lives: Victorian terraces, gated developments, corner shops and schools. This is where most of our larger apartments and houses sit — including three-bedroom, parking-included properties like Greenwich Court — and it's where we send relocating families, project teams and anyone staying a month or more. Beyond the town: Datchet, Old Windsor and the Great Park edge

Staying slightly outside — Datchet across the river, Old Windsor to the south — buys you village quiet and easier driving, at the cost of a short hop into town. It suits visitors with cars touring the wider area: Runnymede, Savill Garden, Ascot and the western edge of London are all within twenty minutes.
